Supported Equipment

In order for EmComm Tools Community to be a reliable offgrid communications platform for field use, it was specifically designed with ruggedized hardware in mind.

Which computers are supported?

Since EmComm Tools Community is based on Ubuntu Linux 22.10, any 64 bit Intel-based computer that works with Ubuntu 22.10 should work as long as it meets the following minimum specifications:

  • 8 GB of RAM
  • 128 GB SSD (256 GB recommended)

The target device used by the author is the Panasonic FZ-M1 Mk2 with iKey keyboard.

What radios are supported?

Tier-1 Radios

Tier-1 radios are those that have full support for all features in EmComm Tools. These are all-band, all-mode radios that support CAT control.

Tier-2 Radios

Tier-2 radios are that support most features of EmComm Tools including PnP support for CAT control.

Dumb Radios

“Dumb radios” are those radios work that with the DigiRig Mobile or the DigiRig Lite. Since these radios do not have CAT control, the operator is responsible for setting the following directly on the radio:

  1. frequency
  2. mode
  3. volume
  4. RF gain/squelch

The author has personally tested both the DigiRig Mobile and DigiRig Lite with the following:

  • Baofeng UV-5R
  • (tr)uSDX
  • Yaesu FT-2980R
  • Yaesu FT-60R
  • Yaesu FT-8900
  • Yaesu FTM-6000R
  • Yaesu VX-6R

When will my radios be supported?

Care was taken to ensure the stability of the plug-and-play platform for the radios listed above. As such, no new radios will be added directly to the base platform. There will be future documentation on how to enable support for other radios.
