User Information
EmComm Tools Community uses a command line tool called et-user
for storing information about the current operator. It is critically important that the information set with this tool is correct as it is used by the Mode Switcher to re-write select application configuration files every time an operating mode is selected or when JS8Call is launched.
The first time that you use EmComm Tools Community, you must open a terminal and run the et-user
command. Applications such as JS8Call, Winlink and YAAC will not start if et-user
is not set with a valid callsign.
A graphical user interface will be introduced in the R4 release that will provide the same functionality as et-user
.
Callsign
- The callsign must be a valid amateur radio callsign and should be entered using capital letters.
- Do not specify a SSID using the callsign-N notation. Just use your base callsign.
- Do not specify a suffix such as callsign/p. Just use your base callsign.
Maidenhead Grid
The maidenhead grid is a shorthand way of expressing a geolocation. It has less precision than latitude and longitude. It is used here as the maidenhead grid is used by most amateur radio operators.
- If you do not know your grid, try using an online calculator to determine your grid.
- The grid must be a valid 4 or 6 character grid and should be entered using capital letters.
- In the future, this will be set automatically if GPS is detected.
Winlink Password
EmComm Tools Community supports radio-based email using the Winlink Global Radio Email system.
If you do not have a Winlink account yet, simply leave this field blank and press [ENTER]
. The first time that you connect to a Winlink station, the Winlink system will see that you are a new user and send you a random password via email. Re-run et-user
again and enter the password that was sent to you.
If you re-run et-user
your Winlink email will not be displayed. However, you can hit [ENTER]
and it will use the current password that is set. There is no need to type it in every time.
Other Notes
You only need to run et-user
under the following conditions:
- The first time that you use EmComm Tools Community.
- You want to use the same system, but switch operators (i.e. switch callsigns).
- You want to change your location (i.e. grid).
- You changed your Winlink password.
